Tax Appeals

If you disagree with your property's tax assessment, Attorney Benson A. Snaider can help. The firm represents property owners whose property has been overvalued by the tax assessor. Benson Snaider works with you to challenge the assessment.

The assessment process

Throughout Connecticut, most assessment processes include the following:

  • The local assessor values your property located in that town
  • The assessor then notifies you of the valuation
  • You can then challenge the assessment amount
  • The assessed value of your property is multiplied by the local millage rate to determine the tax due on your property

Preparing for the appeal process

The notice of assessment you receive from your local taxing authority should include information about appealing the assessment. You should do the following:

  • Carefully review the notice of assessment. It explains the appeal process and other important information about the assessment.
  • Pay attention to the deadline for filing your appeal to the Board of Assessment Appeals.

The process the notice describes is the one you must follow.

Challenging the assessment

When you engage Attorney Benson A. Snaider, the firm works with you to gather and present sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the assessment does not accurately value your property and that the amount of property tax due should be decreased accordingly. Evidence could include the following:

  • Evidence of the purchase price of your property, if recently purchased
  • Assessments of similar properties in your neighborhood
  • Sales of comparable homes in the area

An independent appraisal might also be in order.
